Twenty-two Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes were awarded an Ohio Valley Conference Medal of Honor and 119 Colonel student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2012-13 academic year, the league office announced on Thursday.
This year, there was one more EKU student-athlete who earned the Medal of Honor and 20 more Colonels on the Commissioner's Honor Roll compared to the 2011-12 academic year.
Medals of Honor are awarded to the student-athletes that earn the highest grade point averages (GPA) in each conference sponsored sport and this past year, all of the honorees achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. To be listed on the Commissioner's Honor Roll, the recipients must have posted at least a 3.25 GPA.
The following student-athletes were awarded with Medals of Honor: TJ Alas (baseball), Katie Bright (soccer), Kyle Burton (men's cross country / track and field), Christina Ciolek (softball), Alexus Cooper (women's basketball), Caleb Coulliette (football), Nikki Donnelly (soccer), Amandine Faouzi (women's tennis), Hayley Flynn (softball), Nicki Henry (women's golf), Kelsey Kuehner (volleyball), Saioa Oscoz (women's tennis), Shannon Rutherford (women's track and field), Taylor Speaks (football), Ashley Svec (women's cross country / track and field), Alexandra Szarabajko (women's track and field), Ben Turner (men's cross country / track and field), Rachel Vick (volleyball), Whitney Wallace (soccer), Rachel Welker (women's golf), Eric Wesstrom (women's cross country / track and field) and Karyn Zaage (women's cross country / track and field).
