WKU Football had a pair of practices on Thursday as fall camp practices continued at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
Following practice, offensive lineman Luis Polanco and Sean Conway visited with the media alongside offensive line coach Neil Callaway. Full video coverage of those interviews can be found at the bottom of the page.
From Aug. 5 to Aug. 17, all fall camp practices are open to the public, and fans are encouraged to attend. All practices are scheduled to take place inside Houchens-Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium but the site and times are subject to change. Fans are asked to enter the stadium from the east side gates and remain on the east side of the stadium, opposite the Harbaugh Club. WKU respectfully requests that fans refrain from using their cell phones, including videotaping any portion of practice, taking pictures, texting, or posting to social media.
WKU IN THE NFL UPDATE:WKU Football currently has four players on rosters throughout the NFL, including Bobby Rainey, a member of the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens. Rainey had a big game on special teams last week against Tampa Bay in a matchup against former Hilltopper offensive lineman Adam Smith. Here is a look at where former Hilltoppers will be playing this week and a look back at results from last weekend.
Bobby Rainey, Baltimore Ravens:The Ravens travel to Atlanta on Thursday, Aug. 15 to face the Falcons at 6:30 p.m. CT at the Georgia Dome. Rainey excelled on special teams for the Ravens in last week's 44-16 win over Tampa Bay in the preseason opener for both teams. Rainey had a 58-yard kickoff return and had three punt returns for 37 yards in the win. He also had six carries for 16 yards and one reception for three yards.
Adam Smith, Tampa Bay Buccaneers:The Buccaneers travel to New England on Friday, Aug. 16 to face the Patriots at 7:00 p.m. CT at Gillette Stadium. Last week, Smith saw action on the offensive line in a loss to the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.
Quanterus Smith, Denver Broncos:The Broncos travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 17. The 2013 NFL Draft Pick saw action in the Broncos' 10-6 win over San Francisco last week. He was credited with one quarterback hurry in the game. Smith has enjoyed a strong preseason, gaining national attention as a late-round steal from the 2013 draft.
Jack Doyle, Tennessee Titans:The Titans travel to Cincinnati on Saturday, Aug. 17 to face the Bengals at 6:00 p.m. CT at Paul Brown Stadium. Doyle caught one pass for eight years in last week's loss to Washington in Nashville. While playing special teams, Doyle added one tackle in the contest.
WKU FOOTBALL FAN FEST IS SATURDAY:WKU Football Fan Fest has been scheduled for Sat. Aug. 17 at the WKU Knicely Conference Center, located at WKU's South Campus, when the WKU football team will hold an autograph session and fans can enjoy a carnival like atmosphere, designed for all ages. The event runs from 2-4 p.m. with the entire event being free.
The event will be filled with inflatables, interactive games, balloon art, face painting, the dunk tank, a bungee run and more. Fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from the WKU football players and head coach Bobby Petrino. Special football autograph cards and 2013 schedule posters will be provided free of charge and fans can also pick up schedule cards for the 2013 season. The event also provides the chance to meet and take pictures with Big Red and learn routines from the WKU Cheer and Dance teams.
Kids ages 6-to-15 can also participate in the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick contest at this year's event. Individuals can register online for the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick contest at NFLPPK.com or sign up on the day of the event.
The first 500 fans at the event will also receive free food and drinks, including popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones.
COLLEGE COLORS DAY SPIRIT CUP CONTINUES:Western Kentucky University is participating in the second annual College Colors Day spirit competition and is asking for fan support to help win the national Spirit Cup award, which includes $10,000 toward the general scholarship fund. By visiting facebook.com/collegecolorsday, Hilltopper fans can register to vote for WKU as the school with the most college spirit and loyal fan base. After placing a vote, fans will have the opportunity to win prizes and discounts through an instant win game, view and submit photos to the College Colors Day fan photo gallery, and download a custom Facebook cover photo promoting WKU for College Colors Day.
The Facebook-based rivalry competition, which includes more than 160 participating colleges and universities and is an element of this year's 2013 College Colors Day celebration, kicks off Monday, August 12 and runs through 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, August 29. Fans can vote once each day and can check who is winning the competition nationally and within each conference. The winner will be announced on College Colors Day on Friday, August 30.
In addition, several local retailers have announced that they will participate in offering a 10 percent discount on College Colors Day. The list can be found online at www.wkusports.com.
TICKET INFORMATION:Season tickets, single-game tickets and tickets for the opener in Nashville are on sale now through WKUSports.com, by visiting the WKU Ticket Office in E.A. Diddle Arena or by calling 1-800-5 BIG RED. WKU opens the 2013 season on Saturday, Aug. 31 when the Hilltoppers face Kentucky at LP Field in Nashville at 6:00 p.m. CT
Tickets can be purchased through the WKU Ticket Office in E.A. Diddle Arena in person, by phone at 1-800-5-BIG-RED or online via www.wkusports.com.
Tickets for the Kentucky game are priced at $67 for club level, $47 for lower level sideline, $32 for upper sideline and $22 for upper corner seats for the Kentucky game. Parking passes for this game may be ordered through Ticketmaster.com or through the WKU Ticket Office. The first 4,000 WKU students at the game on August 31 with a valid ID will receive a free ticket to the game. After 4,000, student tickets will be $13.
