Somerset High School has won the Battles in the Bluegrass “Play of the Season,” a $1,000 award given to the school whose Battles highlight video receives the most votes. The announcement comes after a weeklong, online poll that brought in a record number of 252,392 votes.
“We’ve always received a great deal of community support for Battles, but this is truly a record,” said Barry Nothstine, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Bluegrass Cellular. “It’s an honor to be surrounded by such passionate and supportive fans. Congratulations to the Briar Jumpers for their win, and hats off to the seven other schools for a record-breaking season.”
Early last week, Bluegrass Cellular selected one outstanding play from each team’s Battles highlight reel and uploaded the videos to battlesinthebluegrass.com. Between Oct. 21 and Oct. 27, fans could watch the featured plays and cast their votes. Somerset’s fan base played a huge role in the success of this season’s contest, bringing in upwards of 100,000 votes. South Warren High School came in second place with a total of 85,928 votes. While voting is now closed, the highlight videos are still available to watch in the past Battles video gallery at battlesinthebluegrass.com.
Although this award wraps up the fourth season of Battles in the Bluegrass, season five is just around the corner. Bluegrass Cellular will announce the Battles in the Bluegrass Season V basketball lineup this December, with games scheduled to start mid-January 2014.
